At Warren Tech High School in Lakewood, Colorado, we strive to build better futures for our students and community through exploration, sustainability, leadership, and critical thinking.

The love of wonder

is the seed of science.

I

Our newest mission is to develop a multi-faceted outdoor laboratory; the components including a farm, community garden, outdoor education center, S2TEM classroom, and multi-use building to be used as a maker-space and community classroom. Along with our farm, ACRES, the STEM classroom and the Outdoor Education Center will help serve all the members of the community in Jefferson and surrounding counties.

This laboratory will inspire, teach, and contribute to the community for generations to come.

Our Vision

ACRES

    Contact

Our farm, ACRES, established in 2014 is approaching its third growing season. Currently, we supply produce for Union Station Farmer’s Markets and local restaurants in Denver.  We would like to increase ACRES organic produce output and supply our goods to schools and communities in need of fresh produce.

In order to increase exposure and accessibility to the community, the existing greenhouses and grounds require major infrastructure upgrades, such as electricity, water, season extenders, and fundamental farming equipment.

Future projects include educating future farmers and helping them begin farming on their own and disseminate their knowledge to others; exploring the techniques of aquaponics, hydroponics, and urban framing; developing a culinary farm- to- table program.

We need funds to make ACRES a more vivid learning experience for the community. We will use funds raised to build an outdoor education amphitheater, an ethno-botany trail, a community garden and greenhouse, infrastructure upgrades, high and low tunnels, a fruit orchard, landscaping and pergolas, permaculture landscaping, and a compost facility.

The Outdoor Education Center

The purpose of the Warren Tech Outdoor Education Center (OEC) is to help students across Jefferson and neighboring counties become and remain active and engaged in our Colorado outdoor recreation areas through experiential learning and programming.

The OEC will provide an opportunity for students and the community to engage in leadership activities through a high and low ropes course, as well as to teach them to participate in outdoor activities such as camping and hiking in our beautiful mountain playground. Challenges such as the climbing wall, three zip lines, the Leap of Faith, the High Wild Woosie and the eight different low elements like Whale Watch, Trust Wall or Mountain Top  will offer students and community members [user1]  the opportunity to push beyond their comfort zone both physically and mentally.

We need funds to make the OEC a reality. We have the property, but we need the funds to build the high and low ropes course, pavilion, restrooms, tent pads, and forage area.

STEM

The Warren Tech S2TEM Engineering Program will teach students to design and build a wide variety of projects using sustainable methods and practices. Using an integrated team approach, students will learn the basics of sustainable design principles along with practical experience in the design/build process.

Current projects include engineering and developing a carbon dioxide scrubber prototype for NASA; building, coding, and engineering multiple Raspberry Pi 3s for a private company in order to sense rock movement and prevent catastrophic rockslides on major highways; building a classroom using industry-standard blueprints. Future projects include developing unique problem-solving wheelchair modifications for quadriplegic and paraplegic patients at Craig hospital and future NASA projects like the MELFI (-80 life form incubator).

We need funds to expand the S2TEM laboratory. We will use funds raised to build a second classroom/community makerspace and develop renewable energy sources on the site so that students can experience solar wind and geothermal energies firsthand. We need robotics equipment, updated technologies that students can utilize to expand their knowledge of sustainable design and build.
