Medical Assisting
Overview
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assisting is one of the nation's fastest-growing careers. According to the American Association of Medical Assistants, medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in the physician’s office and often explain the physician's instructions.
Medical assistants perform clinical duties that include taking medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination and assisting the physician during the examination. In addition, medical assistants perform administrative duties, such as answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services and handling billing and bookkeeping.
